Winery of the year

Golguz in Hlohovec became the winery of the year

The title of Winery of the Year 2015 was clearly won by the Golguz winery, which received the most points of all.
The original idea of this competition was to award the winery, which won the most awards at domestic and foreign competitions. After several changes, competitions were finally profiled, the results of which are included in the evaluation. The Slovak ones are Agrovíno Nitra, Pezinok Wine Markets, Tirnavia Wine and the National Wine Salon. There are, of course, more foreign competitions, and in addition to the selected ones, all those organized under the auspices of the OIV are also taken into account.

The basis of the future harvest is born already during the winter cut, during which the tines are cut so that the shrubs do not become too overloaded. In 2014, we had an average yield of 5.96 tons of grapes per hectare. Maybe someone would argue, but even in this not exactly ideal season, we had an average per hectare in Golguz last year only 1.5 tons, which is not usual in Slovakia at all. We work in the cellar without compromise in order to achieve the highest possible quality. Even in 2014, we were able to grow grapes of very good quality and produce wines that have not been lost even at the international level. “In years when the pressure of fungal diseases is not so strong, the differences are not so noticeable, but in more demanding years, the differences become more pronounced and then it turns out how the vineyard was managed years before,” adds technologist Marek Kovár. so that the shrubs do not overload too much. The location where our vineyards are planted also plays an important role in the quality of the input raw material. Calcareous subsoil, plenty of sunshine and constant breeze create literally ideal conditions. Even during the planting of Pinot Noir, a small stream flows, which flows into the Vah and creates a fantastic microclimate, which is confirmed annually by wines made from grapes from this locality. For all of them, let’s mention at least the icy Pinot Blanc 2011, which became the winner in its category in the NSV last year.

The specific Hlohovec terroir tickled the noses not only of our but also foreign tasters, because all our wines that took part in last year’s or foreign competitions always ended in the first third and each of them ended up in a medal position. Such a balanced collection was another of the factors that brought Golguz to the imaginary Olympus and we must add that right. However, we must note with one breath that we can owe this success especially to the pinot varieties, which are thriving in Hlohovec. After all, out of the ten wines that got into the top 100 wines in NSV 2015, seven were from this family.

We dare to say that we have a great start in Golguza this year as well. If the statutes of the competition allowed the winner from last year to apply for the title again, Golguz would certainly be a very hot favorite.
We will try not to disappoint our customers and that the wine is just as good and that it brings joy…
